The Glass House New Canaan
The Glass House, built between 1949 and 1995, by famed architect Philip Johnson in New Canaan, Connecticut, is one of the nation’s greatest modern architectural landmarks.
The house, which ushered the International Style into residential American architecture, is iconic because of its innovative use of materials and its seamless integration into the landscape. The style is best understood as a pavilion for viewing the surrounding landscape. The exterior walls are made of glass with no interior walls, a radical departure from houses of the time. Philip started a concept of bringing outdoor living into indoor living, and paved the way for how to live harmoniously with our natural surroundings.
Philip Johnson and his partner, influential curator David Whitney, hosted many parties of the most notable architects, artists and designers of their time.
I was invited by the Bedford and New Canaan Magazine to attend their 2022 Garden Gala with Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil. The weather was perfect to tour this pastoral 49-acre landscape. It is comprised of the midcentury modern Glass House, as well as fourteen structures- follies, outdoor sculptures and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture.
The 300 + guests were dressed garden chic in great style, a nice compliment to this historical house and this occasion. I designed a yellow 3D asymmetrical sleeve white summer blazer for this event. I took a picture of art work that has similar folding effect in the gala. All the the guests spent a lot of time walking around the property and enjoying the serenity and art escape Mr. Johnson has created.
